Began Migration on August 23rd, 2017

After several physical surveys of the 20 nesting platforms at Fletchers Pond located just west of Alpena, a few hardy members of the Michigan Osprey team chose three nests with chicks suitable for outfitting with transmitters.
The number of unoccupied or abandoned nests as well as the the mortality rate was high again this year but we managed to find healthy and strong chicks aged within the 5.5 to 6 week window. These chicks stood the best chance of survival from their first flight (fledge) through migration to South America and back home to Michigan. The deployment date was set for Friday July 28th and the call went out to the DNR, Detroit Zoological Society and the USDA to join us.

Transmitter deployment is complete. Both chicks are safely returned to the nest. Now we await fledging and foraging behaviors and eventual migration. Join us as we track these birds’ movements on www.michiganosprey.org.
